Be cautious—it could be a tax scam designed to steal your personal information or money.
Here’s how to recognize a potential IRS scam:
1. The IRS Will Not Demand Payment Without Documentation
The IRS gives you the right to question or appeal any tax balance.
Do not give out personal details over the phone. Instead, ask for written proof to be mailed to your official address on file.
2. The IRS Will Not Request Immediate Payment by Prepaid Methods
The IRS never demands payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards.
